Mujezinovic Calligraphy

Calligraphy in inlaid wood

Letters cut from one wood and set flush into another: Arabic script, Fraktur, Celtic uncial and Japanese brush characters, made by hand in my workshop.

One word, four scripts

Peace

The idea that holds this site together: one word, peace, in four scripts. Salām in Arabic, Friede in German Fraktur, Síocháin in Irish uncial, and 和 (wa) in Japanese.

The four scripts

For each script I tell what drew me to it, a little of its history, and what I made from it.

More about Arabic calligraphy

A woodworker, not a scholar

I am not a calligrapher or a scholar of these scripts. What I bring to them is the wood.

Each letter is cut from one wood and inlaid into another, flush with the surface. The writing becomes part of the wood rather than being painted or burned onto it. I work with many woods, among them walnut, maple, oak, wenge and padauk, and for each piece I choose the colours that carry the writing.

Buying and ordering

The pieces are sold through CherryCut, where you can also ask for a name or a word in the script of your choice.

Wood panels without lettering, such as Flow and Fracture, are at Reihax.
